Post subject: Wine tasting question.....

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've never understood this. I often see tasting notes with descriptions including references to spices, etc. Do they add spices when making wine?

No they don't add any spices. Each grape has its own specific aroma and flavor. For example, Chardonnay often has hints of vanilla.

Also, each area, location, region, territory etc., has its own mineral compostion which then creates unique aromas and flavors within the grapes.

Aahh...thus begins your journey into unfolding the mysticism of the grape! From my perspective, one of the most enjoyable attributes of wine tasting is guessing the flavors you taste or smell. A juicy petite syrah might have the silky finish of milk chocolate, or a chardonnay can have the aromas of fresh buttered popcorn. But the ensuing aroma or taste will be nothing like what you expected. Certainly more intriguing than opening a can of Coke!

For all your wine tasting questions, why don't you join a local wine club!

Also, why don't you try a book on wine basics, which should cover any tasting question you might have.

Good idea. Give "The Everything Wine Book" by Nowak & Wichman a try.

Here is another wine book: "Kiss Guide To Wine" by Robert Joseph & Margaret Rand. This book might answer many of your wine tasting questions.

Just keep on tasting all types of wines. If possible have a chat with as many winemakers as possible. You will find out that each wine region, area, terrain, etc. will create different Wine Tasting Questions.

Not only the wine region, area, chemicals in soil, terroir, etc. plus the different varietals present some taste of spices. What spices are you looking for?

If you consider some of the heartier Red Wines, aren't the spices mostly pepper related, isn't that true?

Apparently, full-bodied Red Wines like Syrah, Zinfandel, etc. have many times a touch of spice/pepper. Believe that this spice/pepper touch is generated by the Varietals & Local Area Land Chemical Composition? Who knows a better answer?

Good Points, also you will find out that Taste of Wines depend on: Area/Locations, Environment, Soil/Earth, Geography, Climate, Terroir, etc. What wine AVA/Applellation and Varietals re: Spices, are you looking for?
